The Remete Garden<\/strong> is a multi-layered archaeological site from the 4th<\/sup> \u2013 5th<\/sup>\/6th<\/sup> century BC, located on the eastern rim of today\u2019s old town centre. Remains from the ancient town walls of Pharos<\/strong> were found in the Garden. Also, remains from some urban architecture and two housing blocks from the time of the Greek colony of Pharos were found within the walls, separated by a street. Water drainage canals can be seen on the street, as well as a sidewalk above which used to be a porch. The remains of the Pharos town walls preserved in the length of 12 meters can be found in the immediate vicinity of Remete Garden, on its west side.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s interesting that the phases of the ancient town, from the earliest period of Greek colonisation to the times of the Romans and late Antiquity, are stratigraphically aligned in this very spot. Archaeological materials found at the site include ceramic dishes, amphorae, coins of the Pharos polis<\/em>, Roman money, copper arrows and remains from a mold for Tanagra figurines. Several wells from ancient times are located within the site which speaks to the importance of water when choosing the place to build an ancient town. The remains of the south Pharos wall can be found in the Remete house. A large number of sea snails was found in one of the layers which were, in ancient times, used for the production of crimson fabric. A finely made well from Greek times was preserved on the west side of the house.<\/p>\n

In the 5th<\/sup>\/6th<\/sup> century, early Christian twin churches were erected next to the very town gates in the. One of them, dedicated to St. John<\/strong>, has been preserved in its entirety and is still being used today, while only the remains of St. Mary’s<\/strong>, located on the south side, were\u00a0preserved. As indicated by the imprint on the top of its apse, St. Mary\u2019s Church used to be be the main congregational church where the ancient Pharia\u2019s bishop resided. The main town street stretched from the east entrance to the town, and past the church of St. John towards the west.<\/p>\n

Remete Garden<\/strong> is located precisely on the spot where the old town centre ends, and the Stari Grad Plain, included on the UNESCO<\/strong> World Heritage List in 2008, begins.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
